Dr. Zhou Jinfeng Visited Beibu Gulf University to Discuss Chinese White Dolphin Conservation Issues

The Beibu Gulf of Guangxi is one of the major habitats for the Chinese White Dolphin. Recently, Dr. Zhou Jinfeng's team from the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) went to Beibu Gulf University in Qinzhou City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, to conduct an on-site research on the conservation status of the Chinese White Dolphin in Sanniang Bay.

Dr. Zhou Jinfeng pointed out that the first major problem in the conservation of Chinese white dolphins is genetic homogeneity, and there is no communication between the existing groups, which is a great risk of inbreeding. How to avoid inbreeding? Expanding its habitat and migration range, enlarging its population and establishing ecological corridors are the key points for the protection of Chinese White Dolphins in Sanniang Bay.

Dr. Zhou Jinfeng further suggested that the following relevant studies be conducted jointly and immediately to lay a scientific foundation for the protection of the Chinese White Dolphin in Qinzhou. The studies include: determining the causes of the Chinese White Dolphin's deaths through biological forensic studies; understanding the Chinese White Dolphin's family and heredity through genetic testing; and understanding the history of the Chinese White Dolphin's population development and current status through DNA and environmental DNA.

The Chinese white dolphin is the flagship species and indicator species of near-shore marine ecosystems, and in-depth research on it helps to understand the complexity and biodiversity of marine ecosystems; it is of great significance for maintaining marine biodiversity and realizing the harmonious development of human and nature.

Dr. Zhou Jinfeng concluded by emphasizing the need for innovation and synergy between the protection of biodiversity and efforts to achieve the “double carbon” goal, guided by the idea of ecological civilization and based on science and technology.
