November is Manatee Awareness Month

In 2005, the State of Florida proclaimed November Manatee Awareness Month in honour of the large aquatic mammals that live along the Florida coast and in other warm Atlantic coastal waters.

In 1979, the late former Florida Governor and co-founder of the Save the Manatee Club, Bob Graham, first proclaimed November as Manatee Awareness Month, at a time when the state was beginning to establish manatee protection zones. Manatee Awareness Month highlights the importance of protecting manatees and their habitat.

Florida manatees were first listed as an endangered species in 1966. Since then, a number of conservation measures have been put in place, including restrictions on waterfront development and speed limits for boats in areas where manatees may be present. Today, the manatee population in Florida is around 6,000 individuals.

The world’s ocean ecosystems are facing mounting threats—climate change, marine pollution, overfishing, and habitat destruction due to human activities, to name a few. These pressures are particularly dangerous for marine mammals like cetaceans, whose survival hinges on healthy habitats and stable populations.
