Where exactly is the Sand Mining Area in Duchang County? Will it Overlap with the Wintering Grounds of Migratory Birds? | CBCGDF Focuses on Environmental Impact Assessment for Poyang Lake Sand Mining Planning

Recently, the Sand Mining Management Bureau of Jiujiang City, Jiangxi Province released the "First Information Disclosure of the Environmental Impact Assessment Report of the Poyang Lake Sand Mining Plan (2024-2028) in Jiangxi Province" to publicly solicit opinions from the society. Many environmentalists who have been paying attention to this matter cannot find the specific planned sand mining location in Duchang County when reviewing this document.

Mr. ZHOU Haixiang, Director of the Ecological Environment Research Office at Shenyang University of Technology, believes that in the environmental impact assessment announcement, the sand mining tools allowed for sand mining in Duchang County are sand boats, the sand mining season should be conducted in the wet season and underwater. However, may this area also be a beach used by winter migratory birds? This worries him a lot.

The environmental impact assessment of the Poyang Lake water conservancy hub construction project previously announced by the Jiangxi Provincial Department of Water Resources also has the same problem. After the construction of the project, the water level will rise by more than 10 meters, but the specific areas and beaches that will be submerged cannot be known from the released environmental impact assessment information.

The "First Information Disclosure of the Environmental Impact Assessment Report of the Poyang Lake Sand Mining Plan (2024-2028) in Jiangxi Province" shows that from 2024 to 2028, the scope of the Poyang Lake Sand Mining Planning involves the three cities of Jiujiang, Shangrao, and Nanchang and 11 counties (cities and districts) including Yongxiu, Lushan, Lianxi, Hukou, Duchang, Gongqing, Poyang, Yugan, Jinxian, Nanchang and Xinjian. Among them, the first batch of sand mining will be carried out in Duchang County, with an annual total sand mining volume of 17 million tons and a mining area of 12.34 square kilometers.
