Protection with Caring: 24-hour Live Streaming for the Oriental White Storks on the Transmission Towers | CBCGDF BCON

Recently, the Oriental white storks that inhabit the coastal wetlands of Heiyanzi Town, Fengnan District, Tangshan City, Hebei Province, has entered the breeding period. State Grid Tangshan Power Supply Company has launched a 24-hour live steaming for a beautiful couple of Oriental white stork living on a transmission tower, hoping to witness with the public the birds’ daily life, such as incubating eggs and raising chicks together. This is also an opportunity to spread the concept of protecting wildlife.

Starting from the spring of 2018, 15 pairs of Oriental white storks have chosen to stay in this coastal wetland and have set up homes on the high-voltage transmission towers on both sides of the highway. Since then, every spring, Oriental white storks will come here to breed on the transmission towers.

The activity of Oriental white storks near transmission lines poses a threat to their own safety and the operation of transmission lines. Since then, State Grid Tangshan Power Supply Company has started the "Protection of transmission lines and birds" work to ensure the "dual safety" of the national first-class protected wildlife - the Oriental White Stork and the transmission line.

With the joint efforts of the local government, State Grid Tangshan Power Supply Company, the BCON working group of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) and volunteers, this coastal wetland has become an important habitat and breeding ground for the Oriental white stork. In recent years, the number of nests built by the Oriental White Stork has increased from 7 in 2021 to 15 in the spring of 2022.

Now, some Oriental white storks are repairing their nests, while others are incubating their babies. Soon, another group of baby birds will be born from, bringing new hope for their population reproduction.
