Emerging Pollutants Governance | CBCGDF Chemical Working Group Research

 The emerging pollutants are not referred to as new chemicals, but rather as pollutants that pose risks to the ecological environment or human health, and they have not yet been included in general management or monitoring. 

The emerging pollutants widely concerned domestically and internationally regulated by international conventions, include persistent organic pollutants, endocrine disruptors, and antibiotics. The main sources of emerging pollutants are the production and usage of toxic and harmful chemicals.


China has published Action Measures to control the emerging pollutants：

1. Regulatory Enhancement: Strengthen laws and regulations, and establish a governance system for new pollutants.

2. Investigation, Monitoring, and Evaluation: Conduct investigations on chemical substances, monitor environmental conditions, and assess risks of new pollutants.

3. Strict Source Control: Implement chemical substance registration systems, and restrict or phase out hazardous chemicals.

4. Process Control Strengthening: Promote clean production, and regulate the use of pharmaceuticals and pesticides.

5. Deepen End-of-Pipe Treatment: Enhance pollution emission control, and strengthen waste disposal and recycling.

6. Capacity Building: Intensify technological support, enhance monitoring and management capabilities.
