CBCGDF's Conservation of Acer pentaphyllum Diels and the EPIL Case

Acer pentaphyllum Diels is a tree species endemic to Sichuan province, China, and is also a world-famous ornamental tree species. However, the seed yield of Acer pentaphyllum Diels is very small, the seed germination rate is extremely low, and its natural distribution in the wild is extremely rare. In the past ten years of searching in China, the number of known population of Acer pentaphyllum Diels is about 100, and they are all located in areas with severe human interference. According to the IUCN endangered species Redlist, it is already a critically endangered(CR) species, facing the edge of extinction, urgently need rescue protection.

In 2014, Dr. Zhou Jinfeng, secretary-general of CBCGDF, led the establishment of the "Acer pentaphyllum Diels Action Group" to promote China's first preventive environmental civil public interest litigation involving rare plants. The case attracted great attention in China and triggered a large number of media reports. On February 25, 2021, it was selected  as one of the 10 typical cases of ecological environment protection in the Yangtze River Basin, in 2021 by the Supreme People's Court.

At the same time, CBCGDF also promoted and established three ex-situ protected areas (one in Xing'an League in Inner Mongolia, the second in Lanzhou and  the third in Tianshui in Gansu), among which the cultivation of Acer pentaphyllum Diels  in Tianshui protected area was the most successful.
