Human-based Solutions: Key to Implementing China's Biodiversity Conservation Strategy and Action Plan (2023-2030)

Biodiversity is an intricate web of interactions among living organisms (including animals, plants, and microorganisms) and their surroundings, forming the foundation for ecological balance and sustainable development. However, human activities' relentless expansion and impact pose significant challenges to biodiversity conservation. Against this backdrop, "Human-based Solutions" (HbS) emerge as a pivotal aspect of biodiversity conservation, serving as a linchpin for effectively implementing and achieving the objectives outlined in China's Biodiversity Conservation Strategy and Action Plan (2023-2030).

Concept of Human-based Solutions (HbS):

Human-based Solutions (HbS) entail human-based approaches rooted in broad participation and multi-stakeholder collaboration to address biodiversity conservation challenges. While humans are responsible for triggering the sixth mass extinction, they also hold the potential to reverse biodiversity loss trends and foster harmonious coexistence with nature. As a human-based approach, HbS underscores the importance of collective engagement from all segments of society in biodiversity conservation efforts, aiming to achieve sustainable ecosystem development through extensive mobilization and coordination. HbS necessitates involvement from governments, academia, research institutions, conservation organizations, businesses, and local communities, as well as from every individual citizen across all age groups. By promoting community-based biodiversity conservation, reducing biodiversity footprints, and safeguarding ecosystem health, HbS makes biodiversity conservation more inclusive and sustainable.

Peoples vs Plastic Action by CBCDGF

Examples:

In a village in Hubei province, fish farmers adopt a laissez-faire approach during the winter months, allowing "miscellaneous fish and shrimp" to thrive in their ponds instead of resorting to chemical treatments. This seemingly passive action effectively preserves biodiversity by maintaining diverse aquatic ecosystems, fostering stability in the food chain, and attracting migratory birds seeking food and shelter, thus preserving balance in the ecosystem.

In rural areas, some farmers embrace eco-friendly practices such as intercropping, crop rotation, and organic farming, reducing the use of fertilizers and pesticides. These practices enhance the quality of agricultural products and mitigate ecological impacts on wildlife, contributing to the preservation of local biodiversity.

In Sichuan province, residents utilize rooftop spaces to create gardens, planting a variety of flora that increase green spaces in urban areas. These "rooftop gardens" attract butterflies and bees and form temporary "ponds" after rainfall, providing water sources for many bird species and serving as habitats and food sources for urban wildlife.

In Beijing, a secondary school conducts biodiversity conservation education activities, inviting experts and scholars (some of whom are parents of students) to give lectures and organise student clubs like "Wings of Nature," which offer opportunities for ecological surveys and field trips. The school also engages in community outreach activities through eco-exhibitions and distributing informational materials to raise public awareness about the importance of biodiversity conservation, rallying everyone to take action. These educational and outreach efforts foster a greater understanding of the significance of biodiversity conservation among students and their families, igniting enthusiasm for participation in conservation efforts across society.

The implementation of China's Biodiversity Conservation Strategy and Action Plan (2023-2030), and human-based solutions are paramount. Biodiversity conservation requires widespread engagement and support from all sectors of society. Governments, businesses, non-governmental organizations, and individuals all have pivotal roles to play in biodiversity conservation. By establishing collaborative mechanisms and conducting awareness-raising activities, we can harness the collective enthusiasm of society and actively engage in biodiversity conservation efforts.
