Guangdong’s First Insect Catalogue Released! Insect Background Survey Empowers Biodiversity Conservation

Recently, Guangdong Province systematically organized the insect species in the province for the first time and released the "Guangdong Insect Catalogue", which includes a total of 34 orders, 475 families, 3198 genera and 12,093 species of insects, covering insect species information as of the end of 2021. This is the most complete insect catalogue in Guangdong Province so far. (Xinhua News Agency, 2024).

The Insecta is the largest group in the animal kingdom, accounting for more than half of the described species in the animal kingdom (Stork, 2018). However, the number of pollinators, especially bees and butterflies, has declined sharply, posing a huge challenge to the security of human food supply. Intensive agricultural activities, land-use changes, pesticides (including nicotinic pesticides), invasive alien species, diseases, pests and climate change are all contributors to the dramatic decline. Nearly 35% of the world's pollinating insects (especially bees and butterflies) face extinction (FAO, 2018). In addition, the reduction of insect populations will lead to a sharp decline in the number of insect-eating birds, thus affecting the balance of the entire ecosystem and causing a huge impact on nature.

China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), as a national first-level academic society, has long been committed to biodiversity conservation and sustainable development and continues to pay attention to insect diversity conservation. For example, the "Insect Observation Working Group" has been established to actively carry out insect biodiversity research, public advocacy and protection work; support the establishment of community-level "bee reserves" to protect Chinese honeybees; And call for mainstreaming biological control in agricultural production, etc.
