The Significance of Flagship Species in an Ecosystem for Conservation Work | CBCGDF Climate Change Working Group Research

Image
Flagship species play a crucial role in an ecosystem, act ing   as ambassadors for biodiversity conservation , serving as symbols of biodiversity conservation and representing the health of their habitat. These species, often important   and easily recognizable, attract attention and support for the protection of their environment. By conserving flagship species, we can indirectly conserve   the entire ecosystem, including other species and the habitats   of their all . Flagship species also contribute to ecotourism and the local economy, as they draw visitors who are eager to see these iconic creatures in their natural environment. This economic incentive can motivate communities and governments to invest in sustainable conservation efforts that benefit not only the flagship species but also the entire ecological community. F lagship species also serve as indicators of ecosystem health. Their decline or recovery can signal changes in the environment, helping scienti...

On March 31, 2024, Ms. Linda Wong, Deputy Secretary-General of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), attended an event on mainstreaming biodiversity at the National Zoological Museum. After the event, Linda Wong visited the museum's collection of animal specimens. She was impressed by the museum's collection. Look at those two specimens as the pics show -- (Pictures. ©Linda Wong, CBCGDF OceanWetlands Working Group) These photos show the specimens of two cetacean species: the Yangtze river dolphin ( Lipotes vexillifer ) and the narrow-ridged finless porpoise ( Neophocaena asiaeorientalis ).  In the photo, the two cetaceans are lying side by side on the display table. The one on the left is larger, white, has a longer snout, and a smaller dorsal fin. It is the Yangtze river dolphin. The one on the right is smaller, gray, has a shorter snout, and no dorsal fin. It is the narrow-ridged finless porpoise. ———————— Yangtze river dolphin : Th...

Emerging Pollutants Governance | CBCGDF Chemical Working Group Research

The emerging pollutants are not referred to as new chemicals, but rather as pollutants that pose risks to the ecological environment or human health, and they have not yet been included in general management or monitoring.  The emerging pollutants widely concerned domestically and internationally regulated by international conventions, include persistent organic pollutants, endocrine disruptors, and antibiotics. The main sources of emerging pollutants are the production and usage of toxic and harmful chemicals. China has published Action Measures to control the emerging pollutants: 1. Regulatory Enhancement: Strengthen laws and regulations, and establish a governance system for new pollutants. 2. Investigation, Monitoring, and Evaluation: Conduct investigations on chemical substances, monitor environmental conditions, and assess risks of new pollutants. 3. Strict Source Control: Implement chemical substance registration systems, and restrict or phase out hazardous chemi...

Where exactly is the Sand Mining Area in Duchang County? Will it Overlap with the Wintering Grounds of Migratory Birds? | CBCGDF Focuses on Environmental Impact Assessment for Poyang Lake Sand Mining Planning

Image
Recently, the Sand Mining Management Bureau of Jiujiang City, Jiangxi Province released the "First Information Disclosure of the Environmental Impact Assessment Report of the Poyang Lake Sand Mining Plan (2024-2028) in Jiangxi Province" to publicly solicit opinions from the society. Many environmentalists who have been paying attention to this matter cannot find the specific planned sand mining location in Duchang County when reviewing this document.   Mr. ZHOU Haixiang, Director of the Ecological Environment Research Office at Shenyang University of Technology, believes that in the environmental impact assessment announcement, the sand mining tools allowed for sand mining in Duchang County are sand boats, the sand mining season should be conducted in the wet season and underwater. However, may this area also be a beach used by winter migratory birds? This worries him a lot.     The environmental impact assessment of the Poyang Lake water conservancy hub construction...

LEI Guangchun: Important to Strengthen the Implementation Guarantee of Priority Actions and Projects for Biodiversity Conservation

Image
Prof. Lei Guangchun, Dean and Professor of the College of Nature Conservation at Beijing Forestry University, attended the Symposium on Promoting the China National Strateqic Action Plan for Biodiversity Conservation and delivered a speech. Lei Guangchun stated that he had participated in relevant seminars and conferences on the priority actions of the national biodiversity conservation strategy in the early stage. However, the introduction of this strategic document was not based on the actual situation. Currently, there are still issues such as insufficient understanding of biodiversity itself, and the formulation of relevant plans and implementation efforts by various departments still need to be further strengthened. More attention and research are needed to provide more practical guarantees for biodiversity conservation. Reported by Richard Checked by Daisy Contribution Do you know? Investing in Wetland Parks in Areas with Serious Water Shortages: Prestige Project or a Waste of Resources?

Image
High-cost construction of wetland parks in areas with serious water shortages.   In such areas, the government has invested a lot of money to build wetland parks, but it faces the dilemma of extreme shortage of water resources. This behavior is vividly called the "P restige Project ", which means that the government blindly invests in order to  make themselves look good or garner prestige , regardless of the actual situation and people's livelihood needs.   We must clearly realize that the construction of wetland parks in areas with serious water shortages is indeed unreasonable. The construction of wetland parks often requires a large amount of water resources; in water-scarce areas, this behavior is undoubtedly a waste of limited water resources. Local governments should prioritize people ’ s livelihood needs rather than extravagance and waste for the sake of image. This move not only puts pressure on finances, but also seriously affects people's lives.   In additi...

LIU Shukun Strengthening research on the impact of alien species on ecosystems and food chains can help improve biodiversity in the system

Image
On March 29th, 2024, the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) hosted the first symposium in response to the "China National Biodiversity Conservation Strategy and Action Plan (2023-2030)" in Beijing. At the meeting, Dr. Liu Shukun, Former Director, Chief Engineer, and Doctoral Supervisor of the Hydraulic Research Institute of China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research, stated that if a species becomes extinct, the food chain will fluctuate. With more fluctuations, the "web" of biodiversity will have loopholes, which will lead to the sixth crisis of species extinction.  Liu Shukun suggests to strengthen research in the above areas, which will help to achieve better results in the overall conservation of biodiversity in China. Experts should be organized to understand the impact of alien invasive species on local species, in order to guide everyone on how to properly handle conflicts and relationships between specie...
