If Not Using Chemical Fertilizers, is the Amount of Organic Fertilizer Enough? Jiang Gaoming Talks about Ecological Agriculture | CBCGDF Ocean&Wetlands Interview

In recent years, as people pay more attention to green agriculture and sustainable development, organic fertilizer has gradually become an important choice for modern agriculture. Organic fertilizer mainly comes from organic matter such as animal and plant residues and feces, and is made through natural decomposition or artificial fermentation. Compared with chemical fertilizers, organic fertilizers are rich in organic matter, multiple nutrients and beneficial microorganisms, which can improve soil structure, increase soil fertility, promote crop growth, and reduce environmental pollution.

JIANG Gaoming, Professor at the University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, former deputy secretary-general of the China Biodiversity and Green Development Foundation, and founder of Hongyi Civilization Station, pointed out that excessive use of chemical fertilizers can lead to soil degradation, water pollution and other problems, and its production depends on limited petroleum resources. Therefore, it is necessary to reduce the use of chemical fertilizers and develop ecological agriculture. Organic fertilizers come from a wide range of sources, including animal manure, straw, dead branches and leaves on farms, and urban domestic garbage. Through reasonable recycling and utilization, these organic wastes can be converted into sufficient organic fertilizers to meet the needs of agricultural production.

In ecological agriculture, the use of organic fertilizers can not only increase the organic matter content of the soil, but also improve the physical, chemical and biological properties of the soil, thereby improving the soil's ability to retain water and fertilizer. In addition, ecological agriculture also emphasizes measures such as crop diversity and natural enemy control to reduce the occurrence of pests and diseases, maintain soil health and the sustainability of agriculture.

Prof. Jiang mentioned that the practice of ecological agriculture has proved that even without the use of chemical fertilizers, it can achieve or even exceed the output of traditional agriculture. For example, through organic agricultural experiments, the grain output in some areas has reached more than 1 ton per mu. Ecological agriculture can not only increase grain production, but also ensure crop quality and soil health, and achieve a win-win situation of food security and environmental protection.

However, the promotion of ecological agriculture still faces some challenges. For example, the application of organic fertilizers requires more manual input, and most of the people currently engaged in agriculture are elderly people and women, and the price of agricultural products is low, which makes farmers more inclined to use chemical fertilizers. In addition, there are certain technical and management difficulties in the resource utilization of urban domestic waste.

In order to promote the popularization of ecological agriculture, it is necessary to start from multiple aspects such as policies, markets and technologies. The government can encourage farmers to use organic fertilizers and ecological agricultural technologies through subsidies, tax incentives and other measures. At the same time, we should strengthen farmers' training and education to improve their awareness and acceptance of ecological agriculture. In addition, consumers should also improve their awareness of ecological products and support the consumption of ecological food, so as to promote the transformation and sustainable development of the entire agricultural system.

Ecological agriculture is not only the key to achieving food security and environmental protection, but also an important starting point for rural revitalization. By developing ecological agriculture, we can drive more people to employment, promote rural industrial revitalization, and achieve sustainable development of agriculture and common prosperity.
