CBCGDF-OceanWetlands' 5 recommendations adopted! | "Wetland Protection and Development Plan for Shunyi District, Beijing (2024-2035) (Draft for Comments)"

In the afternoon of January 17, 2025, OceanWetlands Group of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) received a call from Beijing Municipal Forestry and Parks Bureau (Office of Beijing Greening Commission), who gave us feedback on the adoption of our suggestions submitted in late December 2024 for the "Wetland Protection and Development Plan for Shunyi District, Beijing (2024-2035) (Draft for Comments)", with 5 recommendations adopted, as follows:

1. It is recommended to include “native species”.

2. It is recommended to introduce the concept of “wetland ecological security pattern”.

3. The concept of “wilderness” should be introduced, and a certain proportion of “wilderness” areas should be reserved in the planning.

4. It is recommended that citizen science be explicitly encouraged and that the public be encouraged to provide biodiversity data from the bottom up.

5. It is recommended to add provisions against illegal fishing of aquatic organisms and illegal wildlife trade (IWT).

Finally, Shunyi District warmly welcomes CBCGDF to guide its work in Shunyi.

Over the years, CBCGDF has been committed to biodiversity conservation. In wetland conservation:

  • We have created an Ocean and Wetlands working team and set up a professional communication platform “OceanWetlands”, which has been read 3.715 million times in 2024 on a single WeChat platform, and the number of subscribers has exceeded 20,000;
  • Actively engaged in policy advisory on wetlands, biodiversity, etc., to serve national/local scientific decision-making;
  • Conducting wetland/biodiversity research across the country;
  • Supporting the establishment of Community Conservation Areas (CCAfa) and widely mobilizing local communities and the public to participate in wetland conservation;
  • Encouraging citizen scientists to take the initiative to record discovered wetland species and share biodiversity information to Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF);
  • Engaged in the compilation of wetland-related standards;
  • Participation in the writing of the UN Environment Programme's 2024 Global Status Report on the Dugong (East Asia chapter) and the review of the report State of the World's Mangroves (2024) by Global Mangrove Alliance;
  • Deeply involved in global wetland environmental governance, including but not limited to in-person attendance in international conferences on wetlands, submitting the best cases of wetland conservation, spreading the good stories of China's wetland conservation, etc.

We would like to thank Beijing Municipal Forestry and Parks Bureau for their attention and strong support to the recommendations we submitted. And we'll Keep an eye on this to better promote wetland conservation.
