Third National Crop Germplasm Resources Census and Collection Campaign Concludes Successfully! 139,000 Crop Germplasm Resources Collected

On December 10, 2024, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs announced the successful conclusion of the third national census and collection campaign for crop germplasm resources. This campaign, which was large-scale, extensive in coverage, and involved a large number of participants, thoroughly inventoried the country's germplasm resources of crops, livestock, and aquaculture, collecting 139,000 samples of crop germplasm resources, nearly 90% of which are local varieties. All these resources have been handed over to the national repository for long-term strategic preservation and can be accessed for breeding and production needs.

The census was conducted from March 2021 to 2023. It covered the fields of crops, livestock, and aquaculture, with the aquaculture germplasm resources census being conducted for the first time. The survey identified the status of 33 types of livestock and 1,018 varieties of germplasm resources. The number of varieties of pigs, sheep, chickens, ducks, and geese all rank first in the world; in the field of aquaculture, 857 germplasm resources were found, with the number of species and varieties ranking first in the world.

To protect the collected germplasm resources, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs has intensified the construction of protection and utilization systems, building a system that combines in-situ protection with ex-situ preservation, complements live body protection with genetic material preservation, and connects national protection with provincial protection. The China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) has actively advocated for the protection of agricultural germplasm resources through initiatives such as the "Rescue Seeds Plan," cleared invasive species, safeguarded food and biological security, and held relevant seminars to promote global environmental governance in the field of agricultural genetic resources.
