Hangzhou Releases and Implements the 1st District-level Biodiversity Concept Plan: Creating a New Model of Biodiversity-friendly Urban Area | CBCGDF Media Reports

According to the Hangzhou Daily, the Shangcheng District Biodiversity Protection Friendly Urban Area Concept Plan was officially released and implemented recently. This is also the first district-level biodiversity concept plan in Hangzhou. The Plan focuses on the protection and restoration of typical species, important sources and ecological corridors in the urban area, aiming to create a new model of biodiversity protection and friendly development in high-density urban areas.

It is reported that the Plan has constructed an overall pattern of biodiversity protection of "one ring, three sources, thousands of points and multiple belts", and has also formulated a number of construction action plans. For example, the "Thousand Parks Plan" focuses on the use of urban green spaces, the construction of biodiversity-friendly experience areas, the construction of friendly habitats, friendly facilities, and so on.

At present, the rate of biodiversity loss is accelerating, and the construction of biodiversity-friendly cities is undoubtedly one of the effective ways to deal with the loss of biodiversity caused by urbanization. The China Biodiversity Conservation Strategy and Action Plan (2023-2030) points out that it is necessary to explore the construction of biodiversity-friendly urban units such as communities, towns and villages, scenic spots, parks, and schools, and strengthen the application of native species in urban ecological restoration and environmental quality improvement.

In recent years, the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation(CBCGDF) has also creatively proposed some concepts and made some useful attempts in the construction of biodiversity-friendly cities. For example, "Biodiversity Conservation in Our Neighborhood (BCON)" launched by CBCGDF, emphasizes that within the scope of our lives, when we cannot fully protect nature, we should try to help wild animals survive and develop by reducing the intrusion into nature and reducing interference with wild animals. It aims to promote the effective protection of biodiversity in areas with intensive human activities, balance protection and development, and coordinate sustainable livelihoods and biodiversity conservation. In 2023, BCON was selected by the Paris Peace Forum as one of the top 50 global solutions and listed as one of the seven solutions in the field of biodiversity. In addition, in urban planning and landscaping management, more consideration should be given to "letting weeds grow" to enrich biodiversity in cities. Weeds not only provide habitats and food resources for various organisms, attracting various organisms to come and live and forage, but also greatly reduce the maintenance costs of urban gardens.
