"Don't Feed the Fish, Several Have Died of Bloating" | CBCGDF BASE: Don't Be Too "Loving" and Feed Animals in Parks during the Chinese New Year
In the video screenshot below, a security guard at the Baotu Spring Scenic Area in Jinan City is carrying a dead koi. From the video, a security guard on the other side is shouting hard: "Don't feed the fish, several have died of bloating", "Don't kill the creatures", "Don't feed the fish". From the photos taken by tourists on the scene, it can be seen that the koi in Baotu Spring are "bloated". Although they are fat, they are not strong and appear to be very clumsy when swimming.
In fact, many "feeding-related harm" incidents have occurred across the country. For example, in 2022, a large number of tourists fed bears in Tianjin Zoo, causing the bears to vomit.
In addition, the enthusiastic feeding behavior of tourists can easily cause stress reactions in some animals. On December 13, 2024, in Zhangjiajie National Park, a monkey aimed at the backpack on the shoulder of a tourist at lightning speed and tried to take it away. Subsequently, a "fight" broke out between the tourists and the monkeys.
At present, Beijing, Shanghai, Sichuan and other places have issued regulations to prohibit random feeding. The Beijing Park Regulations stipulate that visitors are prohibited from intimidating, throwing, hitting, or harming animals or feeding animals in non-feeding areas when visiting parks. The Shanghai Wildlife Protection Regulations clearly state that it is prohibited to feed wild animals that grow and reproduce naturally in the wild environment.
The Biological and Scientific Ethics (BASE) Working Committee of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) reminds: As the Spring Festival is approaching, CBCGDF hopes that when you go out to travel, you will not be too loving, do not feed animals at will, and maintain a sense of boundaries between humans and other creatures in nature.
