Remembering Bradnee Chambers - A Life Devoted to Biodiversity Conservation
January 23rd marks a day of remembrance. On this day in 2019, the world lost Dr. Bradnee Chambers, a esteemed international environmental expert, Executive Secretary of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) and advisor to the International Department of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), after a short illness in Canada.
This article is dedicated to memory Dr. Bradnee Chambers, whose entire academic and professional journey was dedicated to addressing environmental challenges.
Dr. Bradnee Chambers was an outstanding leader dedicated to global environmental protection and international cooperation. His passing has deprived the world of a true guardian and thinker of the ecology. He served as the Executive Secretary of CMS Convention, making inestimable contributions to international environmental governance.
Dr. Bradnee Chambers was not only a a knowledgeable and visionary scholar but also a practitioner.He recognized that ecological conservation is a global endeavor that requires collaborative efforts across borders. During his tenure, he led the CMS Convention through the Conferences of the Parties in Quito in 2014 (COP11) and Manila in 2017 (COP12). Under his leadership, CMS progressed to becoming a stronger Convention with a significantly higher number of Parties.
Prior to his role with CMS, Dr. Bradnee Chambers worked at the Transnational Cooperation Division of UNCTAD in Geneva from 1994-1995.
Dr. Bradnee served in several capacities at the United Nations University Institute of Advanced Studies, including Acting Deputy from 1996 to 2008. He started the Institute’s programme on Sustainable Development Governance and on Environmental Diplomacy and initiated negotiation training courses on climate change and the World Trade Organisation ministerials. He also launched the Junior Professional Fellowship and Post-Doctoral Fellowship programme.
From 2008 to 2013 he headed the Law and Governance Branch of the Division for Environmental Law and Conventions at UN Environment’s Nairobi headquarters. From 2010 to 2013 Bradnee led the UNEP Secretariat in the Nairobi-Helsinki Ministerial Process that resulted in the significant strengthening and upgrading of UNEP at the Rio+20 Conference (The Future We Want). This included transforming UNEP's Governing Council into a universal body called the United Nations Environmental Assembly.
As an international policy expert, Dr. Chambers authored numerous books and articles on reforming international environmental governance, including his book Interlinkages and the Effectiveness of Multilateral Environmental Agreements. Bradnee contributed to the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment and the Global Environment Outlook 4.
Dr. Bradnee Chambers was known for his sincerity and charm. He was not only an outstanding leader but also a partner who was good at listening and respecting others’ opinions. With an inclusive and passionate attitude, he had united people from different countries, cultures and backgrounds to work together for the future of the Earth.
In his speech at the children's environmental painting activity, Dr. Bradnee introduced to the children why they should protect the migratory birds.
It was a tragic loss. However, his spirit and legacy will continue to inspire countless people to forge ahead on the path of ecological protection without cease. Dr. Bradnee Chambers’s vision will live on, guiding us towards a greener and more sustainable future.
