Creating a New Model for Biodiversity-Friendly Urban Areas, First District-Level Biodiversity Concept Plan Released in Hangzhou

According to a report in the Hangzhou Daily, the "Shangcheng District Biodiversity Conservation Friendly Urban Area Concept Plan" has been officially released and implemented. This is the first district-level biodiversity concept plan in Hangzhou. The plan focuses on the protection and restoration of typical species, important source areas, and ecological corridors within the urban area, aiming to create a new model for biodiversity conservation in high-density urban areas.

Currently, the rate of biodiversity loss is accelerating, and building biodiversity-friendly cities is undoubtedly one of the effective ways to address biodiversity loss caused by urbanization. The "China Biodiversity Conservation Strategy and Action Plan (2023-2030)" points out that it is necessary to explore the construction of biodiversity-friendly urban units such as communities, towns, scenic spots, parks, and schools, and to strengthen the application of local species in urban ecological restoration and environmental quality improvement. It also guides the establishment of in-situ and ex-situ biodiversity conservation facilities, as well as urban green spaces and pocket parks as biodiversity experience sites.

In recent years, the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation has also creatively proposed some concepts and made beneficial attempts in the construction of biodiversity-friendly cities. For example, " Biodiversity Conservation in Our Neighborhood (BCON)" emphasizes that within the scope of our lives, where we cannot completely protect nature, we should try to reduce the disturbance to nature and minimize interference with wildlife to help them survive and develop. This aims to effectively protect biodiversity in areas with high human activity density, balancing protection and development, and promoting sustainable livelihoods alongside biodiversity conservation.
