Third Census of Crop Germplasm Resources: What Does the Data Reveal?
On December 10, 2024, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs held a press conference to introduce the situation of the national agricultural germplasm resources census, which was the largest in scale, the widest in coverage, and the most participants, clarifying the types, quantities, regional distribution, and characteristics of China's crop, livestock, and aquaculture germplasm resources, collecting a large number of agricultural germplasm resources, and rescuing and protecting a number of endangered resources.
From March 2021 to 2023, the Ministry of
Agriculture and Rural Affairs, together with localities and relevant
departments, carried out the third census and collection action of crop
germplasm resources. This census collected 139,000 samples of crop germplasm
resources, nearly 90% of which were local varieties. In terms of livestock and
poultry, 33 kinds of livestock and poultry and the status of 1,018 variety
resources were identified, with local varieties accounting for 60%. In terms of
aquaculture, the census resources involved marine and freshwater species,
including animals and plants, and a total of 857 germplasm resources were
found.
To protect the collected germplasm
resources, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs has intensified the
construction of protection and utilization systems, building a system that
combines in-situ protection with ex-situ preservation, complements live body
protection with genetic material preservation, and connects national protection
with provincial protection. The China Biodiversity Conservation and Green
Development Foundation (CBCGDF) has actively advocated for the protection of
agricultural germplasm resources through initiatives such as the "Rescue
Seeds Plan," cleared invasive species, safeguarded food and biological
security, and held relevant seminars to promote global environmental governance
in the field of agricultural genetic resources.
