Protecting Black Bears to Build a Solid Foundation for Biodiversity Conservation | CBCGDF Celebrates the 8th Black Bear Day
January 17, 2025 is the eighth Black Bear Day. Eight years ago, the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) and volunteers successfully rescued a surviving black bear cub. In order to encourage more public participation, support and unity in the biodiversity conservation and black bear conservation, CBCGDF sets January 17 of each year (the day when the black bear cub was discovered and rescued) as Black Bear Day.
Today, CBCGDF ushered in the eighth "Black Bear Conservation Day", which is not only a memorial day to awaken more people to continue to care for black bears, a precious species, but also a new opportunity and turning point for humans to constantly reflect on the relationship between man and nature and strengthen their determination to protect biodiversity.
The survival of China's black bear population is worrying. On the one hand, wild black bears are struggling to survive as a whole due to habitat destruction and fragmentation, reduction or change in food sources, and the impact of poaching and illegal wildlife product trade. On the other hand, the practice of extracting bile from live bears in traditional medicine is not friendly to the survival of captive black bears. In addition, factors such as climate warming are also affecting the survival of black bears. Protecting black bears is urgent.
For a long time, CBCGDF has not forgotten its original intention and mission, and has always been fighting on the front line of black bear protection. CBCGDF Black Bear Protection Group and volunteers have built a protection area system with Xiaoxing'anling Mountains as the core area. By establishing multiple black bear protection areas, conducting daily patrols and popular science publicity, the public's attention and support for black bear protection have been further enhanced, and the foundation for biodiversity protection has been further strengthened.
Protecting black bears and the rich and colorful biodiversity in nature is not a matter of one day or one night. Although there are still many difficulties and challenges in the work of black bear protection, our determination to protect black bears and biodiversity has never wavered. Watching volunteers traveling through the deep mountains and forests, measuring every mountain with their steps; watching researchers setting up infrared cameras and recording more detailed data in the scorching heat and severe cold; watching the public holding brochures, listening carefully to the volunteers' explanations, and casting approving glances; watching the children in the classroom, immersed in the black bear protection lectures, showing happy smiles... We know that the future of protecting black bears and protecting biodiversity is full of infinite possibilities.
On the occasion of the eighth Black Bear Day, we sincerely call for: Pay attention to black bear protection, pay attention to biodiversity protection, let us work together to create a safer and more harmonious living environment for black bears and other wild animals, so that they can live freely in their home on Earth.
