Thumbs-up for Yueyang, Hunan: Successful Rescue of a 4-Year-Old Yangtze Finless Porpoise Trapped in Fishing Line | CBCGDF BASE
On the afternoon of January 9, 2025, the Dongting Lake Finless Porpoise Conservation Center in Yueyang City, Hunan Province received an emergency call reporting an injured Yangtze finless porpoise floating near Dongting Lake Bridge, in urgent need of assistance. Staff members quickly arrived at the scene by speedboat and found the porpoise entangled in fishing line, in a critical condition. Using a large net, they managed to lift the porpoise onto their boat. Upon inspection, it was discovered that the porpoise's pectoral and caudal fins were deeply embedded with fishing line, causing multiple abrasions on its skin. The rescue team immediately began hydrating the porpoise's skin, carefully cutting away the fishing line, and disinfecting the wounds before transferring the injured animal to a holding tank at the Junshan Rescue Station for further care.
On the afternoon of January 10, the
conservation center used a specialized transport speedboat to move the porpoise
to a better-equipped care facility. Experts from the Institute of Hydrobiology
of the Chinese Academy of Sciences provided guidance throughout the rescue
operation and participated in the development of the subsequent care plan.
Currently, the four-year-old male porpoise, measuring 1.4 meters in length, has
stabilized, with its wounds beginning to heal and has started to eat.
In recent years, the water level of
Dongting Lake has been decreasing, and the dry season has been extending,
making the living conditions for finless porpoises increasingly challenging. Hu
Qiang, the director of the conservation center, stated that in addition to
timely rescues, protecting the aquatic habitat of the finless porpoises is also
crucial. This includes persuading beach fishermen not to litter and regularly
cleaning up beach trash. The Yangtze finless porpoise is a nationally protected
first-class wild animal and is mainly found in the middle and lower reaches of
the Yangtze River. In February 2023, the scientific survey results published by
the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs showed that the population of the
Yangtze finless porpoise had stopped declining and started to recover, with a
total of 1,249 individuals, including 492 in Poyang Lake and 162 in Dongting
Lake.
