Have You Heard that Ice Harvesters on Songhua River Earn Tens of Thousands a Month? And Who Should Be Responsible for the Ecological Footprint of the Snow World?

Harbin's winter is renowned for its ice and snow landscapes, particularly the ice harvesting activities on the Songhua River, which provide raw materials for ice sculpture art. Ice harvesters begin their work in the early morning at minus 20 degrees Celsius and continue until dusk, with an average income reaching ten thousand yuan per person. However, such large-scale ice harvesting may have negative impacts on the ecological environment of the Songhua River, including affecting the survival of aquatic life and disrupting the natural ice layer structure, thereby affecting ecological balance. Moreover, the melting of ice and snow landscapes also leads to the waste of resources.


Harbin's Ice Harvesting Festival is an important event to showcase the local ice and snow culture, attracting a large number of tourists every winter. During the Ice Harvesting Festival, ice harvesters and transport vehicles provide ice for the Ice and Snow World, promoting local tourism and economic development. However, with the expansion of ice harvesting demands, there are also concerns about the ecological environment, including possible illegal ice harvesting activities and the squandering of water resources.

While enjoying natural resources, we should consider how to achieve sustainable development. Economic development and environmental protection can coexist, with the key being how to achieve harmonious coexistence between humans and nature in the ice and snow feast. We should use environmental friendliness and sustainable development as our guidelines to promote ecological protection and high-quality development in the Songhua River basin.
