Fish Poisoned in Hulan River, CBCGDF Calls for Increased Investigation Efforts

Since December 2024, volunteers from the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation, in cooperation with fishery enforcement teams in Suhua City, Beilin District, and Wangkui and Lanxi counties, have been conducting winter fishery law enforcement in the Hulan River basin to combat illegal fishing. During patrols, they discovered numerous dead fish, including the nationally protected lamprey, in the Beilin District section of the Hulan River. Locals reported the use of a "drug" that creates a barrier beneath the ice of the frozen river, cutting off the exchange of air and oxygen, leading to fish death by poisoning or suffocation.

The volunteers learned that the drug is made from a mixture of diatomaceous earth and pesticides, but the exact substance remains unidentified. Online searches revealed that such oxygen-blocking substances are readily available and fall into two categories: toxic chemical pesticides like cypermethrin and chlorpyrifos, which also act as nerve agents and can affect the growth and reproduction of aquatic life; and non-toxic substances like vegetable oils that cause asphyxiation. On December 21, volunteers and enforcement officers found dead fish on the frozen river, with larger ones missing, presumably sold in markets after being poisoned in large quantities. Similar incidents were found in other river sections.

The volunteers expressed concern that the lack of resources for fishery enforcement makes it difficult to track down the perpetrators and called for the local police to take the issue seriously to protect the fishery resources that have been conserved through various protection efforts. They warned that the hard-won conservation achievements could be jeopardized if such illegal activities are not stopped.
