CBCGDF Postdoctoral Research Station Is Openly Recruiting Outstanding Researchers from Home and Abroad

About the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF)

The China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) is a nationally public foundation dedicated to biodiversity conservation, environmental protection, and sustainable development. Established with approval from the State Council of China, the CBCGDF is a nonprofit organization registered with the Ministry of Civil Affairs. As one of the first organizations to obtain charity status following the enactment of China’s Charity Law in 2016, CBCGDF is firmly rooted in public service.

A Legacy in Endangered Species Reintroduction and Conservation

CBCGDF began in 1985 as the China Milu Foundation, founded to reintroduce the endangered Milu deer (Elaphurus davidianus) from United Kingdom back to China. Once regionally extinct for nearly a century, this unique species was successfully brought back to its native habitat through coordinated international conservation efforts. The Milu reintroduction has since flourished, from dozens in 1985 to over 12,000 individuals now thriving across China today, and it is acknowledged as an internationally significant example of species re-introduction.

Science-Driven Approach and Advisory Expertise

Guided by a Committee of accomplished scientists, including several academicians and 100+ researchers, CBCGDF’s work is shaped by sound scientific principles. This expert guidance enables CBCGDF to carry out research, promote conservation strategies, and contribute to biodiversity and environmental protection. The Beijing-based Foundation also works closely with other scientific and academic institutions to advance its mission through collaboration and knowledge sharing.

Environmental Media and Public Awareness

Through its media platform - CBCGDF Media, the Foundation report reliable information on key global environmental updates and international environmental conventions, such as the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the International Seabed Authority (ISA), and the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA). By delivering complex environmental news in accessible ways, CBCGDF Media has become an important window for readers in China seeking to understand these global frameworks. CBCGDF Media outreach aligns with group’s aim to integrate environmental awareness into mainstream discourse.

Areas of Focus

CBCGDF's work is organized around several core areas:

1. Biodiversity Conservation: The Foundation actively supports biodiversity conservation through policy consultation, the establishment of Community Conservation Areas (CCAfa), CBCGDF volunteer initiatives, and public awareness efforts on biodiversity.

2. Climate Actions: CBCGDF promotes carbon reduction measures, develops green standards, supports Low-Carbon Workshops, and advocates for sustainable lifestyles as part of its approach to climate change.

3. On Pollution: The foundation works to address pollution on land and in marine environments, including efforts to reduce and recycle plastic waste.

4. Environmental Law and Public Interest: CBCGDF actively participates in policy advisory, and input for almost all major Chinese environmental laws. Empowered by the Chinese Environmental Protection Law, the Foundation has filed 100+  public interest litigations against those who harm the environment, advocating for a rule of law that protects ecological health.

5. International Outreach: CBCGDF is observer to the Rio Conventions - United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD); and it also observes the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES),  Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and other international organizations, CBCGDF actively participates in global environmental governance. CBCGDF is also an accredited organization by the United Nations Environment Assembly and the United Nations Ocean Conference, which allows it to engage directly with international environmental policy frameworks.

CBCGDF Secretariat is based in Beijing and currently has over 60 Subsidiaries.
