The South China Sea Coral Museum Being Renovated | Shared by the Director of the CBCGDF Conservation Area of Coral in Sanya | CBCGDF Science Popularization Base

On December 10, 2024, the Ocean and Wetlands Working Group of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) received a set of renderings of the renovation of the South China Sea Coral Museum, also the CBCGDF Science Popularization Base, from Mr.CHEN Hong,  the Director of the CBCGDF Conservation Area of Coral in Sanya and the Director of the Hainan South China Sea Tropical Ocean Research Institute, which is shared as follows:

From 2011 to now, researchers at the Hainan South China Sea Tropical Ocean Research Institute have used the latest breeding technology and, after years of cultivation, have bred nearly 600,000 corals on a large scale in the waters of Phoenix Island, allowing this once-discolored sea to gradually regain its vitality. These artificial corals have also reproduced themselves, and the total number has now reached millions, becoming a veritable coral garden.

In 2016, the CBCGDF and the Hainan South China Sea Tropical Ocean Research Institute established a coral conservation area. After years of hard work, the reserve has accumulated profound scientific and technological accumulation in the establishment of coral reef germplasm resources and ecological protection practices, and has contributed advanced experience to the protection of global corals.

As an important natural distribution area of corals in my country, there are 137 species of corals distributed in the entire Sanya waters, of which 108 species are in the Sanya Coral Reef National Nature Reserve. At present, corals have become the iconic species of Sanya. After the completion of the South China Sea Coral Museum, it will provide people of all ages with opportunities to understand corals, coral ecosystems and biodiversity through the display and popularization of coral reef biota. As a scientific research station and popular science base, the Coral Museum will provide technical support for the scientific research of coral reefs and the construction of a demonstration base for coral reef ecological restoration.
