EU Revised Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive Will Enter into Force in 2025

The Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive was first adopted in 1991 and has played a key role in the improvement of the quality of water bodies across the EU.

However, after more than 30 years, the Directive was in need of a general overhaul in order to take account of new sources of urban pollution, which have become more dominant (such as smaller cities, decentralised facilities or storm water).

With the revised Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive due to enter into force on 1 January, the EU is taking an important step towards achieving its 'zero pollution' goal.

The new rules will ensure cleaner rivers, lakes, groundwater and coasts across Europe by further protecting human health and the environment from harmful urban wastewater discharges.

The revised Directive will bring financial benefits of around €6.6 billion per year by 2040, far outweighing the estimated costs of implementation, while simplifying reporting requirements for Member States.
