CBCGDF Black Bear Conservation Area Strengthens Poaching Patrols:Don’t let the New Year’s Eve Be Filled With “Wild Game”

Recently, volunteers from the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) Black Bear Conservation Area Wuchang Phoenix Mountain launched a new round of patrol operations, which aims to protect local black bears and other wild animals and maintain the health and stability of the ecosystem.

As the year draws to a close, migrant workers are gradually returning, and the long-silent villages are becoming lively again. "When they are free, some people will break the rules and go out to look for wild game, but my country has completely banned the consumption of terrestrial wild animals. Although most black bears have already begun hibernation, some black bears will wake up early or not hibernate due to food shortages or abnormal climate. Therefore, it is necessary and timely to carry out patrols at this time," said a volunteer.

The heavy snow had just passed, and the patrol route was not easy to walk on. The volunteers shuttled through the snowy forest trails, carefully surveying every area where black bears often move around, and recording every detail. The Northeast in winter is very beautiful, with everything covered in silver, but the volunteers had no time to appreciate it, because they had to pay attention to every step they took, as there might be animal traps buried under the snow, and it was common for them to be injured by these traps.

During the patrol, a volunteer suddenly found a noose left by poachers. It looked like it was set the night before. The volunteer recorded the video and kept the evidence. Then the devices were removed. A volunteer said: "These nooses look ordinary, but once wild animals are locked, they can't break free, even for fierce beasts like tigers and black bears. The more they struggle, the harder it is to break free."

The volunteers know that the road to black bear protection is long and arduous, but every step is crucial, and every patrol is an important step towards the vision of harmonious coexistence between man and nature. Although some people may not understand during this process, they believe that as people's awareness of ecological environment protection continues to increase, this misunderstanding will gradually turn into understanding and support.
