Reflecting on the CBD COP16 decision on DSI | CBCGDF Representative Participating in the ABS Capacity Development Initiative Webinar

On the evening of December 12, 2024, the ABS Capacity Development Initiative team held a seminar to discuss in depth the CBD COP16 decision on digital sequence information (DSI) of genetic resources and future actions. The theme of this meeting was: "Reflecting on the CBD COP16 decision on DSI: What [needs to] [could] [should] happen next?". Representatives of the International Department of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) participated in the meeting online.

At the 16th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP16), a landmark agreement was reached on the sharing of digital sequence information (DSI) of genetic resources. The core content of the agreement includes the establishment of the "Cali Fund". This seminar focused on what needs to be done next for DSI to make this work? What should be done to make the multilateral mechanism for the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of DSI? How will the income of the Cali Fund be distributed? How much impact will the Cali Agreement have on the DSI discussion in the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture or the epidemic instruments being negotiated by the World Health Organization?

At the meeting, Pierre du Plessis, an expert from the ABS Capacity Development Initiative team, delivered a keynote speech entitled " Building the Cali Fund multilateral

mechanism for DSI benefit sharing: An initial overview of some key construction sites". Two expert panels discussed from the perspectives of CBD Parties and from the perspectives of stakeholders and other international forums related to DSI.
