Black Bears Frequently Spotted in Hukai Mountain, Heilongjiang, Attracting Attention to Their Protection | CBCGDF Volunteers Report
Recently,
frequent appearance of black bears in the Hu Kaishan area of Heilongjiang
Province have attracted the attention of volunteers from the China Biodiversity
Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF). Hu Kaishan is located
95 kilometers southeast of Harbin and is known for its unique geographical
environment, with gentle southern slopes and steep northern cliffs.
Since
July 2023, volunteers have discovered evidence of black bears in Hu Kaishan,
including tracks, foraging, tree climbing, and excrement, indicating that at
least two bears are active in the area. Notably, despite the overlap with human
activity areas, there have been no conflicts, which may be related to the
bears' instinct to avoid humans and the local villagers' reverence for the
bears. Volunteers have raised several questions: why don't the bears hibernate,
why do they move in human activity areas, and why do they behave
"sensible"? Preliminary analysis suggests that the bears may be
avoiding conflict with humans by choosing to be active at night, while humans
maintain a respectful distance because of fear.
Volunteers
suggested the establishment of a national-level Hu Kaishan Northeast Black Bear
Nature Reserve, strengthening the protection team, increasing patrol and
protection efforts, and with national support. It is recommended to establish a
"Northeastern Black Bear Forest Park" with national support, and at
the same time conduct a scientific census of existing black bears in Hu Kai
Mountain and its adjacent areas to solve the problem of food shortage in
winter. Hukai Mountain and its surrounding areas are rich in cultural and
tourism resources. Protecting black bears is conducive to the development of
ecological and tourism. The local villagers' understanding of the ecological
environment and awareness of protecting wild animals provide a solid foundation
for the harmonious coexistence of man and nature.
