CBCGDF Coral Conservation Area · Yongle Atoll (CCAfa002) | Introduction to CCAfa System
In 2016, China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) and the Hainan South China Sea Tropical Ocean Research Institute established a Coral Conservation Area · Yongle Atoll, which is the second CCAfa of CBCGDF. After years of hard work, the reserve has accumulated profound scientific and technological accumulation in the establishment of coral reef germplasm resources and ecological protection practices, and has contributed advanced experience to the protection of global corals.

Coral is a colonial animal formed by many coral polyps living in tropical and subtropical waters and is one of the oldest organisms on Earth. The coral reefs they form provide habitats, foraging, and breeding grounds for many marine organisms and also provide resource security for human survival. They are very important marine ecosystems, known as the "tropical rainforests of the ocean." However, with the deepening impact of human activities, marine environmental pollution, climate change, rising sea temperatures, and overfishing, nearly one-third of the world's reef-building corals are on the brink of extinction, and coral reefs are experiencing large-scale bleaching.

China's coral reef area accounts for about 13.5% of the total area of the world's coral reefs, and the situation is also not optimistic. In 2019, the Hainan South China Sea Tropical Ocean Research Institute initiated the "Million Coral Planting" project, hoping to plant a million corals in the coastal waters of Hainan using coral seedling technology, providing a strong "resource library" for coral protection. As of May 2024, the conservation area leader has led the team to complete the planting of nearly 700,000 corals in natural waters such as Sanya Phoenix Island, Xisha Duck Island, and Quanfu Island, and Sanya Yazhou Bay. This restoration and growth plan is in a leading position in international coral planting technology and population expansion.
