CBCGDF Volunteers Clean Up Poisonous Corn That Appeared In The Snow, Mainly Targeting Pheasants
At noon on December 19, volunteers from Suihua Wetland Conservation Area in Heilongjiang Province were conducting an ecological patrol in the wild. When they passed by a wasteland on the roadside near Xiaozhangjiatun Village, Xingfu Town, Beilin District, they accidentally discovered several poisonous corn kernels in the snow next to the dead grass.
"These corn kernels are scattered in small piles on the snow. From the outside, although the color of the corn kernels has not changed much, it can still be seen that they have been soaked," said the volunteer. Similar poisoned corn kernels have appeared in the area before. They are the kind that have been soaked in poison and have a red appearance. Although this kind of poisoned corn looks colorless and tasteless, wild birds will die as soon as they eat it. This kind of spreading of poisoned corn often occurs in winter when it is difficult for wild animals to find food.
The volunteers counted at the scene and found more than 20 poisonous corn kernels in this area of about 2-3 square kilometers. "These things are targeted at pheasants, but sometimes other birds of prey are inevitably harmed." Since the volunteers did not prepare gloves in advance, they had to temporarily bury the poisonous corn kernels in thick snow.
Pheasant is a popular name for ring-necked pheasants. It is a large ground-dwelling bird with a wide distribution in my country. It is distributed in the three northeastern provinces and most areas in central and eastern my country. They like to move in open areas with short trees or grass. At present, pheasants are protected wild animal species in the national "List of Terrestrial Wildlife with Important Ecological, Scientific and Social Values", and hawks and falcons are mostly national second-level key protected wild animals. Poisoning protected wild birds is illegal, and volunteers hope that relevant departments will pay attention to this phenomenon.
