How to Choose Eco-Friendly and Delicious Seafood | CBCGDF Ocean&Wetlands Working Group

Choosing environmentally friendly and delicious seafood is as important for protecting the marine ecology as enjoying the food. The source and fishing method of seafood have a direct impact on the marine ecology. Improper fishing methods, such as trawling, can damage the seabed ecology and lead to the incidental catch of endangered species. In addition, unscientific farming methods can also pollute the environment, affecting water quality and surrounding ecosystems.

Three key points for choosing environmentally friendly seafood:

First, fishing methods: choose fishing methods that have little impact on the environment, such as handline fishing and purse seine fishing, to reduce damage to the marine ecology.

Second, farming methods: give priority to seafood farmed in closed environments, such as ponds or tanks, to reduce pollution to the marine environment.

Third, species characteristics: choose environmentally friendly species, such as oysters and mussels, which are filter feeders that help purify water quality.

Environmentally friendly seafood recommendations:

First, environmentally friendly choices: oysters, mussels and closed-culture shrimp, as well as farmed barramundi, are all environmentally friendly and sustainable choices.

Second, pay attention to the source of seafood: wild shrimp and lobsters have different fishing methods and sustainability, so you should choose certified products when buying.

Third, try to avoid seafood: such as Tasmanian farmed salmon and overfished scallops, which are more damaging to the environment.

Tips for buying seafood

Give priority to local seafood: local seafood has a short transportation distance, a low carbon footprint, high freshness, and is more in line with the concept of sustainable development.

Asking questions is the key: when buying, ask the seller about the source, fishing location and method of the seafood to understand its sustainability.

Check sustainable certification: Look for certification marks such as sustainable fishing and environmentally friendly farming to quickly identify environmentally friendly seafood.

Everyone's choice can have an impact on the health of the ocean. By choosing environmentally friendly seafood, we can not only eat more safely, but also contribute to protecting the ocean. Let our next generation continue to enjoy the gifts of the sea.

Eating good seafood and eating seafood properly is a manifestation of our responsibility for the marine ecology. By understanding the source of seafood, fishing and farming methods, and choosing environmentally certified products, we can contribute to protecting the marine environment while enjoying delicious food. Let us consider these factors when choosing seafood and work together for the sustainable development of our oceans.
