ZHOU Jinfeng Talks about Biodiversity Conservation and Marine Ecological Restoration | 2024 Ocean Cooperation and Development Forum·Qingdao

On the afternoon of October 24, 2024, Dr. ZHOU Jinfeng, President of the World Academy of Sustainable Development and Member of the World Academy of Arts and Sciences, was invited to attend the 2024 Ocean Cooperation and Development Forum and delivered a keynote speech on "Biodiversity Conservation and Marine Ecological Restoration".

The 2024 Global Ocean Development Forum was held from October 24th to 25th, 2024, at Qingdao Cosmopolitan Exposition, Shandong Province, themed on "Let’s Sea our Futures—Promoting Blue Partnerships for Growth and Sustainability", aiming to gather global forces for sustainable marine development. It seeks to promote exchanges among governments, enterprises, scholars, and international organizations, fostering international consensus and cooperation in the fields of marine environmental protection, social responsibility, and governance. The forum strives to enhance the international competitiveness of China's marine industry, continually stimulating new productive capacities through achievements in green development.

In the Session “Promoting Blue Partnerships for Growth and Sustainability”, Dr. Zhou introduced the practices and challenges of marine ecosystem protection around the importance of biodiversity conservation and marine ecological restoration, and called on all parties to strengthen cooperation in this field.

Dr. Zhou took Shanghai Nanhui Dongtan and Jiangsu Tiaozini as examples to emphasize the importance of protecting these ecosystems for maintaining the biodiversity and ecological balance of marine wetlands. He pointed out that how to effectively implement protection measures to achieve the 30*30 goal is still a huge challenge. The protection of marine ecosystems requires global joint efforts. By strengthening the construction of marine protected areas, improving the effectiveness of protected areas, and taking effective ecological restoration measures, we can contribute to the protection of marine biodiversity.

Dr. Zhou pointed out that ecological restoration focuses on the use of the self-organization and self-regulation ability of the ecosystem itself to restore the ecosystem function, supplemented by human intervention. Usually, over a long period of time, the damaged ecosystem can gradually recover to a reasonable structure and complete ecological function, and the final ecological effect is relatively long-term and stable.

Dr. Zhou introduced to the experts and scholars present the work done by the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) as an observer to CBD, ISA, CMS and IPBES. In addition, he introduced the World Academy of Sustainable Development to the guests, which is committed to promoting exchanges and cooperation among countries in the field of sustainable development through scientific research, innovative practices and international cooperation, and providing scientific support and solutions to major challenges such as global climate change and ecological and environmental protection.
