132 Dead Wild Birds Found in a Farmer's Refrigerator in Suihua City, and the Police Filed Immediately a Case|Volunteers from CBCGDF CCAfa Dismantled Bird Hunting Nets
On October 28, 2024, volunteers from the Suihua Wetland Community Conservation Area of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) and the Food, Drug and Environmental Investigation Brigade of Beilin District, Suihua City, as usual, still dismantled bird hunting nets in various districts and counties in the local area. Outside a farmer's yard near Provincial Highway 101 in Sifangtai Town of the city, the volunteers not only dismantled a bird net on the spot, but also found 132 dead wild birds in the refrigerator of this family.
According to CBCGDF CCAfa volunteers who participated in dismantling the bird net, on the morning of the 28th October, they found an inconspicuous bird net outside the yard in front of a farmer's house in Sifangtai Town. "Compared with the large bird nets that were tens of meters high a few days ago, this net is not big, more than 6 meters high and about 15 meters long." After the volunteers confirmed that it was the net set up by this family, they began to dismantle the bird net. When chatting with farmers, the patrol officers learned that this bird-catching net had been set up since the spring of this year and had been left until late autumn, and birds often hit the net. In this family's refrigerator, 132 dead forest birds and 7 live ones were found at one time. The frozen wild bird bodies were placed on the ground, densely packed.
"Bird-hunting nets are really harmful to living things. Bird catchers often rely on a net, but the number of birds that are harmed is too many to count." Based on the situation of local birds hitting the net during the migratory season of migratory birds in previous years, volunteers estimated that when there are many birds, a bird-catching net can catch hundreds of birds in 2-3 days; when there are few birds, it takes about 10 days. The volunteers were very distressed. Among the 132 frozen forest birds, the vast majority were sparrows, with 80-90 birds, and the rest were 4-5 yellow finches, woodpeckers, and willow warblers. This was also the most dead birds encountered when dismantling the bird-catching net after the beginning of autumn this year. The Food, Drug and Environmental Investigation Team of Beilin District, Suihua City and the local police took away all the bird catchers and bird carcasses, and filed a case on the 28th.
