Run for a Cause: Dottie Seal Joins the Dalian Marathon to Advocate Marine Conservation! CBCGDF-OceanWetlands Mainstreaming Biodiversity
On October 20, 2024, the sound of a gunshot echoed through the streets of Dalian, signaling the official start of the Dalian Marathon! The China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) joined in this exhilarating event, represented by its charming mascot, "Dottie Seal", alongside nearly 30,000 marathon runners from both China and abroad, all racing toward the finish line.
The Dalian Marathon is one of the oldest marathons in China, having been held annually since 1987. With 34 successful editions under its belt, it has established a rich history and reputation for professional event management, making it a must-run race for countless enthusiasts. This year, participants hailed from all 31 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions of China, as well as 32 countries and regions around the world, making it a truly international event.
In this year’s marathon, the OceanWetlands Working Group of CBCGDF utilized this endearing character of Dottie Seal to promote the concept of marine biodiversity conservation. Inspired by the protected species of spotted seal, Dottie Seal symbolizes the fragile nature of marine ecosystems, highlighting the challenges faced by migratory marine species in the face of climate change. Through Dottie Seal’s engaging story and lively imagery, the foundation aimed to emphasize the need for synergistic actions to protect biodiversity while addressing climate change.
This event also comes as a prelude to the sixteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD-COP16), where the urgency of marine and wetland conservation will be at the forefront of discussions. By bringing awareness to these pressing issues during such a high-profile event, CBCGDF hopes to inspire a collective effort towards the protection of our oceans and wetlands.
As the runners sprinted forward, united by their passion for sport and the environment, the Dalian Marathon became a vibrant platform for advocating the critical need to safeguard our planet’s biodiversity. In a world facing escalating environmental challenges, the celebration of such an event serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility we share in protecting our natural heritage - save our ocean!
