Who is Dottie Seal? A Symbol of Saving Our Seas! #OurOcean2025
"Dottie Seal" (海斑斑) is more than just a charming cartoon character; it’s a symbol of hope and action for the protection of marine biodiversity. Created by the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) , Dottie Seal represents a powerful message from the CBCGDF's OceanWetlands Working Group: that the health of our oceans is deeply connected to the well-being of our planet, and we all have a role to play in protecting it.
Inspired by the spotted seal, a migratory species found in China’s coastal waters, Dottie Seal brings attention to the fragile balance of marine ecosystems. Spotted seals, like many other marine animals, are highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, habitat destruction, and pollution. Through this playful and approachable figure, CBCGDF seeks to engage the public in the urgent conversation around ocean conservation, raising awareness of the threats facing marine species and inspiring collective action to preserve biodiversity.
Dottie Seal’s story illustrates the journey of a species whose survival depends on the health of the seas. From melting ice caps to polluted waters, the challenges Dottie Seal faces are reflective of the global environmental crisis. Yet, the character's positive and determined attitude is a reminder that solutions are within reach if we act together.
The message behind Dottie Seal is clear: protecting marine biodiversity is not just about saving individual species, but about maintaining the intricate web of life that sustains us all. As a species affected by climate change, Dottie Seal highlights the importance of collaborative efforts to combat global warming while safeguarding our oceans. The character embodies the principles of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), encouraging actions that address both the protection of species and the mitigation of climate impacts.
Whether featured at high-profile events like the Dalian Marathon or used in educational campaigns, Dottie Seal aims to inspire people of all ages to think critically about their relationship with the environment. By making marine conservation accessible and engaging, Dottie Seal fosters a sense of responsibility and empowers individuals to become stewards of the oceans.
In essence, Dottie Seal is a call to action. It represents the urgent need for conservation efforts that not only protect our oceans and wetlands but also ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy the rich biodiversity of our planet. Through the lens of this adorable seal, we are reminded that every action counts—whether it’s reducing plastic waste, supporting conservation initiatives, or advocating for stronger environmental policies. Together, we can make a difference for the oceans and all the life they sustain.
Join Dottie Seal in the mission to protect marine biodiversity and secure a brighter, healthier future for our planet.
(Note: The OceanWetlands of the CBCGDF, as an accredited organization for the 2025 UN Ocean Conference, will proudly present Dottie Seal at the #OurOcean2025 Summit in France. Stay in tune!)
