Dr. Musonda Mumba Delivers a Speech at The 8th Summit for Subnational Governments and Cities|2024 United Nations Biodiversity Conference

As an important part of the urban ecosystem, urban wetlands play an irreplaceable role in solving urban water resource problems and protecting biodiversity. Wetlands have powerful functions of storing water and purifying water quality, which can effectively alleviate urban waterlogging and improve the quality of the water environment. At the same time, wetlands are also habitats for many animals and plants, providing cities with rich biodiversity and improving the stability of urban ecosystems.

The 8th Summit for Subnational Governments and Cities, an official parallel event to CBD COP16, has taken place on 26 October 2024 in the Blue Zone at the CBD COP in Cali, and is part of a 3-day program from the 25-27 October.

The following is the speech of Musonda Mumba, Secretary-General of the Convention on Wetlands, recorded by CBCGDF representatives.

A few months ago, I visited the city of Kigai. Kigali is one of the wetland accredited cities in the world. In 2015, in Uruguay, during cop twelve of our convention, the wetland city accreditation skills. And this scheme was to encourage cities, even the cities that may not necessarily be part of our convention, to accredit and have more wetlands within their cities, but also take care of these cities. Why Kida Kigali is a seemingly small city, but for those of you that have visited many years ago, the city was incredibly degraded. And over time, the characterization of the wetlands in Kigali, 25 years later said in a Bird Species not returned.

I take you on a journey to Shenzhen city in China. It is not one of our accredited cities, but a beautiful place where we're doing a lot of work and restoration with two towering cities on the inside, Shenzhen and Hong Kong. And just upstream in Yinchuan in South Korea is the birthplace of the black face spoon Bill, which migrate south and finds its way in Shenzhen as its summer and wintering area.

I wanna come to this continent, this beautiful continent of the Latin America. In February of last year, I was to Mexico City, beautiful city. I've never been to Mexico City. And on the edge of Mexico City is around the side called Mexico. A few months ago, similar to Bogota, Mexico City was in the headlines, the crisis of water. And because over 60% of the world population in the living in cities, the wetlands are so critical and important, not just for the by diversity, but also for our water supply. But what I found really fascinating and incredible is the role of local communities and local government in the restoration of textile. Because this wetland system and lake system that has been for a long time degraded in national lives is the lifestyle of Mexico. And in fact, of Mexico, because the waters of Mexico end up being indalable to grow corn. And alcoholic colleagues.

What can we do? And thank you, Amy and my sister. They're talking about this element of connectivity, the disruption that is happening in our hydrological cycle has manifested in the places where our cities. So it's important that we take care of them in a very holistic and collective. And I really want to congratulate the mayors in this room for the work that you're doing, because the role of local governance is absolutely critical. And please count on our support as a convention of wetlands, and we'll look forward to a number of your cities joining the Wetland Accredited City Application Scheme. Thank you very much. Which is why I succeed.
