CBCGDF Contributes to Global Biodiversity Knowledge via GBIF Contributions

The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) is an international initiative that offers free and open access to data on biodiversity from all over the world, enabling scientific research and informed conservation efforts. Its platform aggregates species occurrence records and other biodiversity data, fostering collaboration among governments, organizations, and scientists. China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) is a data publisher to the GBIF.

In July 2018, GBIF celebrated a significant milestone by surpassing one billion species occurrence records. Shortly after this achievement, on July 10, 2018, the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) hosted a conference in Beijing to commemorate the milestone, helping to raise the visibility of GBIF in China. This event was widely covered by the media and helped spur increased sharing of biodiversity data within the country.

Since becoming a data publisher to GBIF in 2018, CBCGDF has actively mobilised ciziten scientists' contributions to the global biodiversity data pool. CBCGDF team has published over 4,300 biodiversity occurrence records on the GBIF platform, enriching the database and enhancing understanding of species distributions. Beyond data contributions, CBCGDF has actively promoted GBIF within China by developing and distributing educational resources. These efforts have helped raise awareness of the importance of biodiversity data sharing among Chinese researchers and conservationists, facilitating greater engagement with GBIF.

By bridging the gap between global biodiversity data networks and China's scientific community, CBCGDF has played an active role in fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange. Accessible biodiversity knowledge is essential for effective global conservation. CBCGDF is dedicated to making biodiversity a mainstream issue and encouraging broader participation in conservation efforts.
