Thirty-eight Percent of the World's Trees are Threatened with Extinction

The IUCN Red List now contains 166,061 species, of which 46,337 are threatened with extinction.

For the first time, the majority of the world's trees have been included in the IUCN Red List, revealing that at least 16,425 of the 47,282 species assessed are threatened with extinction. Trees now account for more than a quarter of the species on the IUCN Red List. The number of threatened trees is more than double the number of threatened birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians combined. Tree species are threatened with extinction in 192 countries around the world.
