Norway Allocates $20 million to Support Colombia’s Deforestation Fight

Norway has pledged 220 million Norwegian kroner (about $20 million) to Colombia to support its efforts against deforestation, Climate and Environment Minister Tore Sandvik announced at the CBCGDF COP16 in Cali, Colombia.

The funding is aimed at strengthening Colombia's rainforest protection and reducing illegal activities that threaten the region's biodiversity.

It is reported that since 2015, Norway has partnered with Colombia under a results-based agreement, which has provided critical support for forest conservation and law enforcement. The cooperation has also promoted sustainable development, indigenous rights and reforestation in vulnerable areas.

The new funding, which will be allocated over three years, will strengthen measures to combat large-scale illegal deforestation and environmental crime, as well as support alternative livelihoods for small farmers. Norway's support will also strengthen the rights of indigenous peoples to better manage their forests in the face of growing pressure from illegal actors.

As the observer to CBD, China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) sent the delegation to attend the conference.
