CBCGDF Representative Visit Colombia Botanical Garden before the Opening of CBD COP16

Colombia has always been one of the countries with the richest biodiversity in the world, and Colombia is very proud of this. The government's strategies and actions have contributed greatly to this, such as laws and actions in ecological education, biodiversity science popularization, and the protection of indigenous people's local wisdom. At COP16, Colombia hopes to put indigenous peoples at the center of the stage and highlight their contributions.

CBD COP16 officially opened on October 21, local time in Colombia. He Jingxiao, representative of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), has arrived in Colombia. He went to the Botanical Garden in Bogota, the capital, to find out because he heard that it is worth visiting. The name of the botanical garden is Jardín Botánico de Bogotá José Celestino Mutis.

The entire botanical garden has done a very serious and excellent job in popularizing science in plants, organisms, ecosystems and biodiversity. Through detailed displays and rich educational content, they provide visitors with the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the natural world.

Pollinators

There are many pollinators in nature, such as bees, wasps, beetles, flies, butterflies, moths, lizards, birds, bats, rodents, monkeys and many more! These animals act as efficient pollinators, allowing plants to put a lot of energy into forming attractive flowers. Once the flowers are successfully pollinated, the plant is able to reproduce, thus ensuring its survival and passing on its genes to the next generation.

How to create a biodiverse garden?

The choice of plants and how they are planted has a profound impact on the diversity of animal species that a garden can attract and support. In order to attract a large number of pollinators throughout the year, it is important to choose plants that bloom for a long time. Plants that bloom at specific times will attract specific types of pollinators. In addition, planting plants that provide fleshy fruits and seeds can provide a food source for birds and some mammals.

By planting a variety of trees, shrubs and grasses of varying sizes, you can create a complex environment similar to the edge of a forest, which is ideal for attracting a variety of wildlife. The denser the vegetation in a garden, the more animals it can support. However, some animals, such as wolf spiders, require small areas in the garden to encourage them to inhabit.

Different insects, birds and mammals have their own unique feeding methods, so planting flowers of different shapes and sizes allows them to obtain the resources they need in different ways, further increasing the biodiversity of the garden.

The five glass greenhouses in the center of the botanical garden simulate three ecosystems in Colombia. Start with an alpine ecosystem and explore the source of the river, then the world's most biodiverse rainforest, and finally learn about the biodiversity of the threatened tropical dry forest. The fourth greenhouse shows the close relationship between humans and plants, showing how these plants are used in food, medicine, fabrics and construction. The last greenhouse introduces the research, protection and breeding of endangered plants.
