CBCGDF Successfully Held a Joint Side Event at the 52nd Plenary Session of the Committee on World Food Security | Bridging the Rio conventions to Build a Sustainable Agricultural Food System

On October 22, 2024, China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) jointly held a side event at the 52nd Plenary Session of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS 52) with FAO, Alliance Bioversity-CIAT, International Land Coalition; One Planet Network Sustainable Food Systems Programme, Rights and Resources Initiative, Swiss Federal Office for Agriculture, UNDP, UNEP, etc. The theme of the side event is “Bridging Rio Conventions-Uniting Climate, Biodiversity and Land Tenure Agendas for Sustainable Agrifood System”.

 





The meeting was chaired by Kaveh Zahedi, Director of the Office of Climate Change, Biodiversity and Environment, FAO. James Lomax, Sustainable Food Systems and Agriculture Lead, UNEP gave an opening speech. 

In an interactive panel discussion on the cases and perspectives on the CFS Food Systems Guidelines, Esther Dweck, Minister of Management and Innovation of Public Services, Brazil; Prof. Frederick Charles Dubee, CBCGDF Senior Director; Grace Mbong, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Cameroon and Madeleine Kaufmann, Senior Policy Advisor, Federal Office for Agriculture and Co-Chair of the Agroecology Coalition, Switzerland, shared their insights on comprehensive approaches that can successfully achieve agri-food system transformation, how to ensure the implementation of the common goals and activities of the Rio Conventions with a focus on sustainable agri-food systems, and how to promote multi-sectoral coordination to address priorities across different sectors.

 


Christian Derlagen, Senior Advisor, Food Systems, UNDP, delivered a closing speech at the side event.

 


The 52nd Plenary Session of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS 52) started its first day on October 21 and will last for 5 days to October 25, 2024 in Rome, Italy. This year's session will focus on the 2024 State of Food Security and Nutrition report, the endorsement of those CFS products developed by the Committee during the intersessional period, the update of the CFS Multi-Year Programme of Work for 2024-2027, the report by the High-Level Panel of Experts on Food Security and Nutrition (HLPE-FSN) on "Strengthening urban and peri-urban food systems to achieve food security and nutrition in the context of urbanization and rural transformation", and other ongoing CFS workstreams and priorities.
