Handling Endangered Protected Animals that Escape from Conservation Bases | CBCGDF Climate Change Working Group

When an endangered protected animal escapes from a conservation base, a series of carefully considered actions should be taken.

First, immediate monitoring is crucial. Using modern tracking technologies such as GPS collars or drones, the location of the escaped animal should be determined as quickly as possible. This helps in assessing the potential risks it may face and the areas it might be headed towards.

If the escaped animal is in a relatively safe area, it may be possible to wait and observe. Some animals may return to the conservation base on their own, especially if they are familiar with the area. However, if it is in a dangerous situation, for example, near a busy highway or in an area with a high density of predators, intervention may be necessary.

Trained professionals should be involved in any attempt to recapture the animal. They need to use non - invasive and humane methods. Nets or tranquilizer darts may be used in some cases, but strict regulations must be followed to ensure the safety and well - being of the animal.

Communication with the local community is also important. Informing the public about the escaped animal can help prevent accidental harm and also enlist their support in the search and recovery process. After the recapture, a review of the conservation base's security measures should be carried out to prevent future escapes.
