ZHOU Jinfeng: Biodiversity Investigation in Mining Areas Should Closely Serve the Goals of Ecological Restoration and Recovery | ZHOU Talks about New Civilization (Lecture 306)

On September 30, 2024, Zhou Jinfeng, Vice Chairman and Secretary General of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), presided over and attended the meeting on biodiversity investigation and restoration in relevant mining areas in Beijing. During the meeting, he made suggestions on the upcoming biodiversity investigation in mining areas.

At the meeting, Dr. Zhou pointed out that for biodiversity investigation in the mining area, special attention should be paid to several characteristics. First, the purpose of the investigation is to directly serve the later ecological restoration. Therefore, at the beginning of the investigation, technical solutions should pay special attention to the changes in the local atmospheric environment, such as the impact of air dust, and to the changes in soil environment and water quality, and the integrity of the local ecosystem structure. Dr. Zhou suggested that the biodiversity investigation of relevant mining areas should fully cover local wild animals and plants, especially insects among terrestrial animals, and aquatic organisms involved in mines, to ensure that the basic data surveyed can be used as the base data for ecological restoration and research, and play a supporting role in the subsequent ecological restoration strategies and ecological restoration effects.

Regarding the specific sample plot design in this biodiversity investigation, Dr. Zhou said that it must be adapted to local conditions and closely serve the purpose of the later investigation to ensure that ecological restoration is completed economically and efficiently and create a long-term overall development plan that conforms to this region, etc. Dr. Zhou hopes that researchers participating in the field survey of the target mining area will study the background data in a solid manner, pay attention to the areas with potential for ecological restoration, and make leading innovations in the biodiversity survey of the mining area and the formulation of the later restoration strategy, and contribute new paradigms and new models to the biodiversity investigation and ecological restoration in this field.
