Mongolia Plants 84 million Trees to Combat Desertification

Since the inception of its national tree-planting campaign in 2021, Mongolia has successfully planted a total of 84 million trees across the country, as reported by the country's presidential press office on Wednesday.

The campaign, named Billion Trees, was announced in October 2021, following an announcement by President Ukhnaa Khurelsukh at the United Nations General Assembly, wherein he stated that the objective of the campaign is to plant a minimum of one billion trees by 2030, with the aim of combating desertification.

Mongolia is a vast country, covering an area of over 1.5 million square kilometres. However, less than 10 percent of this area is currently forested. As reported by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, approximately 77% of the country's territory has been impacted by desertification and land degradation.
