Mt. Huanggang Fire-bellied Newt Discovered in National Park in Jiangxi Province

Chinese researchers from Anhui Normal University have discovered a new species of newt on Mount Huanggang, the main peak of Mount Wuyi National Park, which stretches across the eastern Chinese provinces of Jiangxi and Fujian.

The new species is called the Mt. Huanggang fire-bellied newt. It is characterised by conspicuous black spots all over its body, a tan back and a bright orange underside.

According to the researchers, nine specimens were collected from a small waterhole on Huanggang Mountain in Yanshan County. Analysis of the samples identified the fire-bellied newt as a new species.
