Prof. John MK Wong, CBCGDF Expert & Marine Biologist Calls for the Establishment of a National Marine Reserve on Daqingzhen Island

As an important transit point for migratory fish, Daqingzhen Island's rich marine biodiversity is of great significance to the stability and sustainable development of the global marine ecosystem.

Professor John MK WongMarine Biologist  and the OceanWetlands team of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation(CBCGDF) strongly call for the designation of Daqingzhen Island and its surrounding waters as a national marine reserve. This will help curb illegal fishing activities and restore and protect the ecosystem in the area. By establishing a reserve, it is not only possible to effectively maintain the biodiversity of this sea area, but also to preserve a pristine marine habitat for future generations. By incorporating it into the national marine reserve network, protecting it and preserving it, it is expected that the various organisms in this ecosystem will continue to thrive, while also contributing China's strength to the world's marine conservation cause.

Another suggestion of  Prof. John MK Wong is that Daqingzhen Island is far offshore, while Huidong County in Guangdong has the only sea turtle reserve in the country, which attracts many tourists to visit. The seas in this area are rich and diverse, and there is a whale reef in the sea. Back in the 1950s and 1960s, local fishermen caught whales here, most likely humpback whales. Considering the unique ecological value of this sea area, it is recommended to include Daqingzhen Island in the management together with the turtle protection area and the whale reef to better protect the diversity of marine life and promote the sustainable development of the ecological environment. Through comprehensive management, the ecological protection effect in the region can be effectively improved.

Prof. John MK Wong is the chairman of the Hong Kong Marine Environment Protection Association. He is currently the executive director of the Qatar Gulf Whale Shark Conservation Center and the consultant of OceanWetlands. He is passionate about marine environmental protection. As an environmental advocate who loves the ocean deeply, he has long actively supported marine scientific research and marine biodiversity protection.
