Can Humans Obtain New Energy from Space to Alleviate the Climate Crisis? | CBCGDF Climate Change Working Group

The idea of obtaining new energy from space to combat the climate crisis is both fascinating and challenging. One potential source is solar power satellites. These satellites could collect solar energy in space, where sunlight is more intense and uninterrupted compared to Earth's surface. The collected energy could then be beamed back to Earth in the form of microwaves or lasers. For example, a large - scale solar power satellite array could potentially generate a vast amount of electricity.

However, there are numerous obstacles. The cost of building, launching, and maintaining such satellites is currently prohibitively high. The technology required for efficient energy transmission from space to Earth is still in its infancy and needs significant development. There are also safety concerns regarding the beaming of energy to Earth, as any misalignment could cause damage.

Moreover, the scale at which these space - based energy solutions would need to operate to make a significant impact on the climate crisis is enormous. It would require international cooperation on a level not yet achieved. Despite these challenges, if successfully developed, space - based energy could provide a clean and abundant energy source, reducing our reliance on fossil fuels and thus helping to mitigate the climate crisis.
