Interview with Marine Expert | Professor John MK Wong: Hong Kong Marine Protected Areas Are a Key Link in Achieving the 30 × 30 Biodiversity Goal and Promoting Economic Diversification
Professor John MK Wong, a renowned marine biologist and advisor to OceanWetlands, has been advocating for the establishment of a marine protected area in the southern waters of Hong Kong. In an recent interview, Professor Wong detailed the ecological importance of this region, which boasts a diverse array of marine life, including rich fisheries, endangered whale and dolphin populations, and the last remaining sea turtle nesting beaches. Recognized by Mission Blue as China's first "Hope Spot", this area is pivotal for achieving the global biodiversity target of protecting at least 30% of the ocean by 2030.
Professor Wong's proposal might face significant challenges, including opposition from stakeholders and the Hong Kong government's plans for reclamation and development in the area. Despite these hurdles, Professor Wong has been instrumental in garnering international recognition and support for the conservation initiative. He has been conducting ecological research in the region since 1998, uncovering a plethora of marine life forms, including plankton, squid, crustaceans, and crucial breeding grounds for the Chinese white dolphin.
The establishment of the marine protected
area is not just about conservation. Professor Wong envisions it as a catalyst
for sustainable economic development. By preserving the marine ecosystem, the
area can become a hub for eco-tourism, providing a new source of income for
local communities and diversifying Hong Kong's economy away from its reliance
on real estate. Wong also points out that with only 7% of Hong Kong's waters
currently protected, the proposed 24% protection plan is essential for meeting
the UN's Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF).

In addition to its ecological and economic
benefits, Professor Wong believes that the marine protected area will enhance
Hong Kong's international reputation, positioning it as a leader in ocean
governance and conservation. The success of Hong Kong's country parks in
protecting terrestrial environments and attracting tourists from around the
world serves as a model for what could be achieved with a similar approach to
coastal and ocean protection. Professor Wong's work and advocacy underscore the
potential for the southern marine protected area to become a beacon of
ecological preservation and a driver of sustainable economic growth.
