The Cycle of Matter Conversion between Biomass and Non - Biomass | CBCGDF Climate Change Working Group

The cycle of matter conversion between biomass and non - biomass is a fundamental process on Earth. Biomass, consisting of living organisms, is constantly interacting with non - biomass components.

Plants, as primary producers in the biomass, play a key role. Through photosynthesis, they convert carbon dioxide (a non - biomass gas) from the atmosphere, along with water and sunlight, into organic compounds, which are part of the biomass. When plants die and decompose, the organic matter is broken down by bacteria and fungi. Some of it is released back into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide (a non - biomass form again), while some is converted into soil organic matter, which can be further transformed into non - biomass minerals over time.

On the other hand, human activities can also influence this cycle. Burning of biomass, such as forests, releases large amounts of carbon dioxide into the non - biomass atmosphere rapidly. In industrial processes, non - biomass materials like minerals are used to produce fertilizers that can enhance plant growth and thus affect the biomass. This complex cycle of conversion between biomass and non - biomass is essential for maintaining the balance of the Earth's ecosystems.
