Zhou Jinfeng: to Invest Funds for Zoo Construction in Protecting and Rebuilding Natural Ecosystems | ZHOU Talks about New Civilization

On September 9, 2024, "The World of Chinese" published an article titled " Can China’s Zoo Boom Ever Lead to Better Animal Welfare?". The article mentioned that as of 2021, there were about 300 zoos and wildlife parks in China, accounting for one-fifth of the world's total. About half of these zoos appeared before the 1980s as scientific research centers and public places.

The World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) lists conservation, scientific research, natural education and entertainment as equivalent functions of modern zoos. Dr. ZHOU Jinfeng, Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), believes that the number of zoos is declining globally. Dr. Zhou also cited two famous examples: in 2022, the 186-year-old Bristol Zoo in the UK closed; recently, the Memphis Zoo in the United States laid off employees. In 2023, the panda house in the Memphis Zoo had a suspected abuse of pandas, which also caused widespread public dissatisfaction in China.

Regarding the future development of zoos, it is mentioned in the article of Dr. Zhou’s suggestion that zoos should be gradually phased out, and funds and efforts should be invested in protecting and rebuilding natural ecosystems; No new zoos should be built, and existing zoos should make necessary adjustments, such as releasing animals into the wild.

Dr. Zhou said: "People may criticize my views now, but sooner or later, this is the way we have to go. Places like Beijing Zoo and Hongshan Zoo will eventually close or transform, but at this stage, they can point us in the direction of progress to a certain extent."
