"Migratory Bird Lifeline" Project Launched by China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation

Since September 2021, the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) has been working together with the State Grid Public Welfare Foundation and domestic ecological protection institutions to jointly implement the "Migratory Bird Lifeline" project.

The focus of the project is the protection of rare birds such as Oriental White Stork and Crested Ibis along the transmission lines. The project investigates the distribution of birds near power lines, summarises the distribution patterns of bird-related faults, conducts popular science publicity and training exchanges, and actively builds a bird-loving and line-protecting alliance under the six dimensions of "multi-party networking, scientific research, technological innovation, policy promotion, patrol and rescue, and public education" to scientifically promote the public welfare cause of jointly protecting "birds and lines".

Over the past three years, 24 project sites in 19 provinces along the migratory routes of migratory birds in China have carried out habitat surveys, volunteer training, patrolling and rescue work.

More than 13,000 birds have been rescued at the project sites over the course of the project. In 2022, more than 350 Oriental White Stork chicks were raised on the pylons, making a significant contribution to the conservation of this endangered bird species. At the same time, the project also innovatively established a physical line protection and bird-loving innovation workstation and two Oriental White Stork sanctuaries. It also promoted and participated in the local government's formulation and issuance of a management method for Oriental White Stork sanctuaries, and conducted nearly 1,000 bird-loving and bird-protecting public welfare activities, involving more than 40 million people.
